Tips for avoiding dry hair this winter, from the Paso Robles hair stylist
As we look forward to the relief winter brings from our scorching summer temperatures, the upcoming holidays, and that refreshing chilly nip in the air, don’t forget to give your hair some extra TLC! As temperatures drop, so do humidity levels, stripping hair of its natural moisture. The drop in moisture can lead to frizz, static, breaking hair, and dry scalp and skin. Ashley Hamman, a hair stylist in Paso Robles, has some tips to keep your hair stunning and healthy all winter.
Shampoo your hair in lukewarm water to avoid stripping away the natural oils.
Reduce the number of hair washings to preserve the natural moisturizing oil.
Use quality products on your hair. If your skin and hair tend to the drier side, ask your stylist about hydrating and deep conditioning over the winter.
Microfiber towels are gentler on your hair than cotton. Gently dry your hair to reduce friction.
Cover your hair when outside. Now might be the time to go hat shopping!
Don’t go outside with wet hair when it’s cold!
Minimize blow drying, straighteners and curling irons. Talk to your stylist about using a heat protectant when you do need to apply heat.
Air dry your hair when possible.
Keep up with regular trims to remove split ends and prevent further damage.
Allow more time for pampering your hair during the winter.
Stay hydrated and follow a good diet. Salmon and other fish that are rich in omega-3 fatty acids also provide protein, B vitamins, selenium and vitamin D.
Other foods that are good for your hair, scalp, and skin include sweet potatoes, eggs, spinach and leafy greens, berries, avocados, nuts, seeds, beans, legumes, citrus fruits and lean meats.
Also, if your hair tends to become more fragile in the winter, discuss a winter style with your stylist. There may be some hair-saving changes you can make, such not tying your hair back into a pony tail during the winter.
The colder it is outside, the warmer we want to be inside. Running the heat and those romantic fires in the fireplace also lower humidity inside, contributing to even more drying. Here are some suggestions from the Paso Robles hair stylist for protecting your hair when inside.
Use a humidifier at night. Not only will your hair and skin thank you, your nasal passages will, too! There is a wide variety of humidifier styles, some even run on cold water so there is no worry about accidentally spilling heated water on yourself. There are also personal sized models that can sit on a desk in the work place.
If you heat your home with a fireplace or wood stove, place a pot of water near the fireplace or on the stove to create some moisture in the air.
Consider changing pillow cases to a fabric with less static, and change them a few times a week to help reduce static. Let the pillow cases air dry instead of putting them in the dryer. Even with softening strips, fabric can have more static in the winter.
It might be winter, cold and dark, but don’t let the winter blues get to you! You can still have beautiful hair for the holidays and the extra pampering you give your hair and yourself over the coming months will pay off when the sun comes back!
